Manuscript Evaluation
Give your work the best chance for success with substantive feedback from an experienced editor. The manuscript evaluation comprises thorough, high-level forensic evaluation of your manuscript with an eye to core weaknesses and an action plan for revision. Plot, structure, pacing, character, voice: Baker Street Editors leave no stone unturned. Writers receive a detailed editorial letter, comparable to the one you will receive from an acquisitions editor at a publishing house, with detailed recommendations for revision of the manuscript. As noted earlier, Manuscript Evaluation is the *specialty of the house.* Whether you opt for a full or complete ms. evaluation, you will find that our editorial letters inspire the elevation of your work to the next level. Manuscript evaluations are custom-quoted based on the professional rate standards of the Editorial Freelancers' Association. *Request a quote.*
Baker Street Editors has extensive experience editing novels, memoirs, books of essays and individual short stories or essays for submission. |
"It is of the highest importance in the art of detection to be able to recognize, out of a number of facts, which are incidental and which vital. Otherwise your energy and attention must be dissipated instead of being concentrated."
Consultation & Coaching
Pursue your calling in the company of an experienced mentor and guide. Writers often pair a manuscript evaluation with some hourly coaching (especially useful for review of query letters, short stories or works in progress). "Hourly coaching" sessions can include phone and e-mail consults, passing a particular piece of writing (a scene, an essay, a query letter) back and forth between writer and editor, as well as asking questions and getting direction about how to proceed. (Baker Street Editors also works with a select number of student writers --high school, college, graduate-- for academic writing, on an hourly basis. Contact us for information and availability.) Consultation services include action plans for writer's block, career development and the publication process, including drafting queries and identifying next-steps for your work. Take advantage of my experience to avoid common pitfalls, and enjoy the support of a compassionate, insightful professional who will nurture your project to completion. Rates are custom-quoted based on services contracted, and on the professional rate standards of the Editorial Freelancers' Association. *Request a quote.*

Line Editing
In the current literary market, editors expect highly polished submissions. A line edit offers the most comprehensive clean-up of your work short of a good proof-read.* Along with a global critique and an editor's report, the line edit addresses style, consistency and voice in a thorough red-line of the work. It includes word choice, sentence polishing and substantive paragraph re-working, if necessary, all while retaining your own, distinctive authorial fingerprint. Rates are custom-quoted based on the length and condition of the manuscript, and on the professional rate standards of the Editorial Freelancers' Association. *Request a sample edit and a quote.* Baker Street specializes in the reduction of high-word-count manuscripts to publishable lengths.
Appropriate for: completed manuscripts that have been vetted for major structural issues (plot, pacing, character). If a line edit turns up significant structural concerns, those will be noted in the editor's report. |
"Nothing clears up a case so much as stating it to another person."
* A word regarding proof-reading and copy-editing: While a line-edit will catch many errors (typographical, grammatical, spelling, etc.), neither those corrections nor compliance with any particular style manual is the purpose of a line-edit. Manuscripts reflecting egregious grammatical, spelling or usage errors will be returned to the writer with a recommendation for third-party proof-reading services.
